<lj:music>Worthy Of - Justin Timberlake</lj:music>

So here it is again, time for a new year to begin. I find it very hard to get excited about New Year Eve and it's celebrations. I mean, I can see why people celebrate it, and understand that it's a great chance to have fun with friends, but I just can't help shake the feeling of 'meh' towards it.
Out of all the noted holidays that I celebrate in some way, it's right at the bottom of the list, after the likes of Christmas, Easter, Valentines and Matt Damon's birthday.

Perhaps I am just too cynical, but in my experience you have to get pretty drunk to enjoy the night on a major level. Looking at what I did last year, I just stood in a crowd of people, in long lines for expensive drinks, and just drank, because it was too loud to have a conversation of any sort, and just cheered when the clock struck 12, then went home. Being drunk hid the fact that it was somewhat pointless.
Although, there may be some larger force at play here, to do with being around people, to be with your 'kind' in a sort of animalistic sense, a collective group of strangers of the same species that celebrates together, or some wank like that.

Looking back, all my New Years have been relatively low key with the except of last year. Before that I mainly just spent the night with a handful of friends or family. I think my favourite was 04/05 when three of us stayed at a place in Falls Creek and sat on a balcony drinking vodka cruisers, while a group of drunkenish (possibly English tourists?) people in their 50s sang Gilbert & Sullivan songs.

Tonight I had nothing planned until a friend asked me if I wanted to have dinner with her and a group of her work clients or something, which is a really nice gesture. So once dinners over I guess I'll probably just go wherever they do. I will try and avoid the Octagon as much as possible though. I know I'm usually never in the mood for large groups of people and noise, but tonight I am feeling even less in the mood.

I think it's possible that my problem may be a lack of assertiveness and/or imagination. I think New Years would be quite different if I had a fair idea of what's fun so I could plan something and invite sufficient amounts of people to enjoy it with me, rather than just leaving my night up to the burden of others. Maybe that can be my New Year's resolution, to figure out what to do next New Years.

As for the year itself, I think it's probably been my best year of all, if you had to rate them in some way.
Positives: Made new friends, gained a social life, got over some minor anxiety issues, got into a good routine with Polytech and such and generally changed my outlook on a lot of things. Also making the step to enrol for University too is probably the big one.

Negatives: My mental health feels as if it is continually deteriorating. I'd like to get a hold of that next year. Resolution #2 I guess.

Anyway, I must go or I'll be late for dinner. I hope you all have a fun New Years celebration, and a great 2009!

    <lj:music>Pixies - Dancing the Manta Ray</lj:music>

Had a rather nice and calm Christmas day, I think attributed to that fact that it was just my parents and I at our house, and that I didn't go with them to Mosgiel where the rest of the (extended) family were gathering for a Christmas dinner.
I often whine about being tired, which was the reason why I went home instead, because I've just been feeling exhausted most of the time, mainly in an emotional sense I guess.
Ended up having a quiet night in, in front of the television with wine and the Pavlova I decorated in the morning with whipped cream, strawberries, Kiwi fruit and a Flake bar grated and crumbled on top, and watched Christmas episodes on TV from Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill and South Park (earlier at my parents I had watched Simpsons and Futurama Xmas episodes) and then the second half of Love, Actually.

So yes, it was a nice and subdued Christmas.

Painting and art supplies - acrylic paints, a brush, a technical pencil, canvas, book on drawing techniques and a sketch pad.

A bunch of grooming products - deodorants and body wash (someone trying to tell me something, perhaps?)

A really awesome home made calendar from my sister, with scenic photos she's taken that look amazing.

A 640gb external hard drive.

Red Dwarf Series IV and Dylan Moran Live Collection.

Two t-shirts - one of Beaker and one of the Cookie Monster in a parody of the Nevermind album cover, with a cookie on a fishing line instead of a dollar bill

$60 in vouchers for an online DVD store.

A stress ball.

Our traditional slightly small and weak looking Christmas tree.

My company for the evening.

Beaker!

C is for cookie, that's good enough for me

<lj:music>The Whitlams - I Make Hamburgers</lj:music>

Since I am horrendously unoriginal, I thought I'd make my Top 10 movies list of 2008.

Films Top Ten
10. Wall-E & CJ7- Waaaaall Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Tied. Both incredibly cute, enjoyed them immensely.
9. The Escapist - Managed to completely fool me with it's ending, which turned it from a good film into a great one for me.
8. And When Did You Last See Your Father? - Just about made me cry.
7. The Savages - I guess this is what critics would describe as a 'sleeper hit', or something. Somewhat simple in premise but damn good.
6. The Wave - Slightly scary and brilliant.
5. In Bruges - Pleasant surprise in quite a few ways. Seems to be talked about a lot at the moment, but none if it really justifies how actually well made this movie is.
4. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - Managed not to be a complete downer of a film, which is rather remarkable in itself given what it's about.
3. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days - The most sobering film I've ever seen, I think. Incredibly well directed and some of the best acting, ever.
2. The Counterfeiters - I think the easiest way to describe it would be ' amazing Holocaust film' instead of trying to come up with different ways to say powerful, emotional, etc.
1. There Will Be Blood - Quite probably my favourite film of all time. Just awesome.

The top 4 I all saw at least twice in the cinema. Ohhh I have no life.
I think I saw more films in the cinema this year than the previous 20 years of my life put together.
If I remember correctly I saw Run Fatboy Run (x2), There Will Be Blood (x2), The Happening, Love In The Time Of Cholera, How To Lose Friends And Alienate People, Wall-E, In Bruges, CJ7, The Escapist, The Wave, The Savages, And When Did You Last See Your Father, The Diving Bell And The Butterfly (x2), 4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days (x2), The Counterfeiters (x3), O'Horten, Jar City, Ben X, The Dark Knight, Hancock, Flight Of THe Red Balloon, Gonzo, Joy Division, Sukiyaki Western Django, Death Race and Juno.

At a guess, thats about 350-400 dollars on movie tickets. Nice to be some people.

Would do a top ten albums but I've been the opposite of movies this year in regards to music. Mainly just getting the back catalogues of bands/artists rather than buying new albums released this year, but I dare say my number 1 would be So Many Nights by The Cat Empire.

    <lj:music>Sahara Hotnights - Oh Darling!</lj:music>

It's hot.

It's doing things to my mind.

Standing, waiting to cross the road as an endless amount of cars crawled by in both directions, I turned my sweating head to face downhill.

There was a woman filling up a few containers, wearing a summer dress, as the sun bore down on us through an o-zone hole.

And I stared.

She had water dripping off her forearms, and she wiped her brow and pushed back her hair

And I stared.

Like some kind of dumb animal staring at a mirror.

"I've got to get a girlfriend, just for the summer, until this wears off. She'll be a summery girl. She'll have hair. She'll have summery friends who know how to be outside. She'll play tennis and wear dresses and have bare feet, and in the autumn, I'll ditch her, because she's my summer girl!"

Apart from finding a Pyramid that no one really knew existed, the combination of futuretronmachines and ancient history is a big winner in my books.
